Pet tag: name + phone, a custom pet tag 3D printed in several colours Render

Start from a design

Each one opens in the designer with your own text and pictures ready to change. The image is a 3D render of that design exactly as it prints.

What to put on a pet tag

The job of a pet tag is to get a lost pet home, so the most useful tag is the simplest: your pet's name on one line and a phone number on the next, both big enough to read without glasses. Some owners add "I'm microchipped" or a second number. Your street address is optional; many people leave it off for privacy.

The designer keeps the number readable for you: every font has a minimum height we measured, and you'll get a warning if the phone number is set smaller than that. Bold, simple fonts (we suggest a block or rounded sans) beat scripts on a tag that's only 30 to 50 mm across.

Shapes and sizes

Choose a classic rectangular tag, a round coin, a shield or a hexagon. Small tags (up to 32 mm) suit cats and small dogs; medium (up to 40 mm) is the usual dog-tag size; large (up to 52 mm) has room for a photo plus a name. Each tag is about 3 mm thick and weighs only a few grams, far lighter than a brass or steel tag, so it won't bother a small pet.

A photo tag turns your picture into up to 8 flat colours. It works best with a clear, well-lit photo of your pet against a plain background. The preview shows exactly how the simplified version looks, including which small details are too fine to keep.

Honest durability notes

Our tags are printed in the same stiff plastic as our keychains. The colours go all the way through, so the name can't rub off the way paint or printed vinyl can. But it is not chew-proof: a teething puppy can bite through a plastic tag, and it can soften in high heat, so don't leave it in a hot car. For a dog that chews everything, a metal tag is the safer choice, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a tag that won't last. Our guide are 3D printed pet tags safe? goes into more detail.

Small parts can be a choking hazard. Attach the tag with a proper split ring or S-hook, check it now and then, and replace it if it cracks.

How we make it

Your pet tag is printed to order in solid, durable plastic, in fine layers with every colour running right through. Before it prints, we open your design and its preview and check that every detail will come out: that's the Maker Check. Then it's packed in a padded mailer and handed to Canada Post.

Shipping and timing

We print within a few business days of checking your order. Shipping is a flat CA$19.95 anywhere in Canada, tracked, and several prints share one mailer. Canada Post delivers in about 2 to 9 business days. Details on our shipping page.

Pet tags: questions

What should I put on my pet's tag?

Your pet's name and a phone number you'll answer are the essentials. Optional extras are a second number, "microchipped", or a short medical note. Keep the text large so it reads at a glance.

Will a 3D printed pet tag survive the dog park?

For everyday wear on a collar, yes: the colours are solid plastic, not paint, so they don't wear off. Rough play, chewing and hot cars are its weak points, so for heavy chewers we recommend a metal tag.

Is it safe if my dog chews it?

No plastic tag is chew-proof, and pieces bitten off are a choking hazard. If your pet chews its tag, switch to metal.

How big should a pet tag be?

Around 25 to 32 mm for cats and small dogs, 35 to 40 mm for medium and large dogs. The designer shows the real size in millimetres.

Can I put my pet's photo on the tag?

Yes. The photo becomes a bold flat-colour picture with up to 8 colours. A clear photo on a plain background gives the best result.

How does it attach to a collar?

Through the hole at the top with a split ring or S-hook, the same way as a metal tag.
